A loving tribute to a beloved pastor emeritus

St. Catherine Parish, Middletown, honored the memory and celebrated the life of their beloved former pastor – Father John B. Cook – with a Mass of Christian Burial Jan. 8 celebrated by Bishop John M. Smith.
A large contingent of parishioners, friends and family members – many of whom were overcome with emotion as they approached the casket - were joined by clergy from local area churches united in their fond and vivid memories of the priest known as ‘Cookie’ to his friends. Father Cook served as pastor of St. Catherine for 25 years and in the words of current pastor, Father Daniel C. Hesko, “He was an example of Christ’s life in words and in deeds. A priest not only bears the responsibility for preaching the Gospel, but of also embodying it and living it. Father Cook set a powerful example.”
During the homily, Father Hesko lauded his predecessor for his tremendous compassion and often unheralded good deeds. “There are so many things which went unnoticed, and he was so charitable to this parish. He kept money coming in, and many kids who couldn’t afford a Catholic education went to school for free.
“Father Cook was always ready to help, but was quiet about it. He was devoted to the children, loved sports, and never missed one of their games,” Father Hesko stated. He also noted that Father Cook had served as a priest for 61 years. “I say that he will have served for 61 years with an emphasis on ‘will.’ His priesthood is eternal, and we should continue each day to remember him,” Father Hesko said.
Father David G. Delzell, former pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Highlands, who is now retired, sang a moving rendition of the Ave Maria, prefacing the song with a personal farewell to his friend. “This is for you, Cookie,” Father Delzell said. He noted that the selection was a personal request from Father Cook.
Before delivering final commendations, Bishop Smith paused to impart comforting words to those gathered. “I know he was a dear friend. It is a tribute that so many parishioners are here despite his retirement for so many years, and today is the day we celebrate what began 87 years ago when he was baptized,” Bishop Smith stated.
Shirley Corcoran, a St. Catherine parishioner since 1967, summarized the feelings of her faith community after the Mass. “Father Cook stood out, and he never wavered in his faith. He did so many wonderful things that people don’t know about. He always spoke for what was good and right and was a true priest dedicated to God’s work,” Corcoran said.
