A Hundred Years of Service

Guests and supporters of Catholic Charities receive communion during a special Mass celebrating 100 years of service for the agency in the Diocese of Trenton, Feb. 1 in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton. With Msgr. Casimir Ludzinski as principal celebrant the Mass was the official starting point for a round of festivities that will highlight the agency which, through Depression and disaster, has been a trusted resource to those in need in Central New Jersey. Marlene Lao-Collins, Catholic Charities’ executive director, pictured below at the reception which followed the Mass, said the coming observances of the centennial year will shine a spot light on all these aspects of the history of the agency.“This centennial is significant because it is an acknowledgement of Catholic Charities’ vital role in the social services network in central New Jersey throughout the 20th century and now into the 21st century,” she said. Richard Gillespie, pictured with Lao-Collins, is chair of the CC centennial committee, a former board committee member of Catholic Charities and was honored as the Mercer County Light of Hope recipient at the CC Guardian Angel Dinner Dance in the late 1990s. Gillespie, a parishioner in St. James, Pennington, is an active community volunteer, philanthropist and the former President/CEO of Gillespie Advertising. Jeff Metzner photo
