A Flick of Faith

In honor of Advent, students and teachers in the religious education program in St. Benedict Parish, Holmdel, held class at the movie theater. With the help of many catechists and the support of the parish pastor, Father Daniel F. Swift, students in grades five through eight viewed “The Nativity Story” on the big screen. The opportunity, coordinator of religious education Denise Contino says, allowed the students both to see a film that depicts a vital aspect of their faith, and to do so in a public setting. The decision to watch the film in a theater revolved around the understanding that the Catholic faith is strong enough to bring out into the public arena, and is not something the students have to do in the privacy of a classroom, or their own home or school. “We could have just had it in the gym,” Contino said. “But we wanted the children to realize that they can bring their faith into the public arena.” Between students and their families, more than 300 attended the screening. Contino added, “it was nice for people to see Catholics going out and having fun.”
