The Ministry of St. Anne in St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Red Bank, will observe the feast of St. Anne, July 26, with a 10 a.m. Mass and reflection given by the parish’s newly appointed pastor, Father Alberto W. Tamayo.

Father Tamayo will speak on “Being Spiritually Fertile.”

Parishioner Jo-Ann D’Apolito explained how it has been a tradition of the parish to observe the feast of the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary and grandmother of Jesus each year with Mass and guest speaker.

“We often have follow-up round table discussions after the talks,” D’Apolito said, noting that parishioners from surrounding parishes and their friends are welcome to attend the event.

Giving some background on the Ministry of St. Anne, D’Apolito recounted how the ministry was founded by a group of mothers in 1928 which at the time was called Madre Cristiane, or Christian Mothers. In later years, the group’s name was changed to the St. Anne’s Society and was active in assisting the pastor and parish community.

“The majority of these women came here as immigrants with very little earthly goods, but with a strong determination to make a new life for themselves and their children,” D’Apolito said.

Today around St. Anthony of Padua Parish, the Ministry of St. Anne members have come to be affectionately known as the “Annies” or “Annies on the Move,”  D’Apolito said with a smile.

“Members reflect St. Anne, whose name means grace and mercy, and perform many special services of love in our parish community. We look through the eyes of St. Anne, the grandmother of Jesus, as she witnesses and journeys with her grandson through the good times and the challenging times,” she said.

Other presentations that the spirituality team of the Ministry of St. Anne sponsors during the year include in-house retreats and programs on such topics as “We are Bread, Blessed, Broken and Give,” “Holy Waiting,” “The Holy Spirituality of Women in the Bible,” “The Spirit of Joy,” “I See Forgiveness” and “The Spirit and Heart of St. Anne.” The group also hosts other programs that are social, recreational and educational in nature such as a “Christmas is Coming Luncheon for Families and “Craft Buddies,” D’Apolito noted.

St. Anthony of Padua Parish is located at 121 Bridge Ave., Red Bank. For more information on the upcoming St. Anne celebration, call 732-747-0813.
