Red Mass for law returns to Long Branch

Invoking a tradition that goes back centuries, the Monmouth County Red Mass for judges, lawyers, law professors, law students and government officials in the legislative and executive branches will be celebrated Oct. 13 at 12 p.m. in St. Michael’s Church, 800 Ocean Ave., Long Branch. People of all faith traditions are invited and welcome to attend.
Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., will be presider and homilist at the Red Mass, which will coincide with many Red Masses around the country in early October, marking the commencement of the new judicial year of the United States Supreme Court on the first Monday of the month.
The Red Mass derives its name from the color of vestments worn by the clergy at the Mass, and represents the tongues of fire symbolizing the Holy Spirit. Additionally, the name is connected with the English tradition that red is customarily the color of the academic robes and hoods of individuals who have earned a degree in the field of law.
