Sister Margaret Mary Smith, served in ministry of education

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 30 in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, for Mercy Sister Margaret Mary Smith, who died July 26. She was 94.
Sister Margaret Mary, the former Sister Mary Borgia, was born in Atlantic City. She attended St. Mary Academy, Watchung, for high school; entered the Sisters of Mercy in Watchung and was professed in 1949. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education in Georgian Court College (now University), Lakewood, and a master’s degree in special education from Seton Hall University, South Orange.
Over the course of her 47 years in education, Sister Margaret Mary taught in several schools throughout the state including St. Mary Academy, Lakewood. She then assumed positions at Monmouth School for Exceptional Children, Eatontown, and also as coordinator of religious education for the Trenton Diocese and was also director of special education for the Camden Diocese.
Sister Margaret Mary is survived by her sister, brother-in-law, nieces, nephews and members of her community.
Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.
