Funeral services will be held June 16 in Assisi House, Aston, Pa. for Franciscan Sister Marie Catherine Spellman who died June 7. She was 96.
A professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis for 70 years, Sister Marie Catherine was born in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston. She entered religious life in 1953 and professed vows in 1956. She held a bachelor’s degree in education from Villanova University and ministered both as an educator and in healthcare, dedicating about half of her 70 years to each.
In the Trenton Diocese, Sister Marie Catherine spent 15 years, first reaching in St. Anthony School, Hamilton, and then Corpus Christi School, Willingboro. She then served in healthcare for seven years as an assistant patient service manager in St. Francis Medical Center, Trenton.
Other ministries where Sister Marie Catherine served included the Archdioceses of Philadelphia and Boston. She retired from ministry in 2006.
Sister Marie Catherine is survived by her nieces, nephews and her Franciscan family.
