Deacon Robert R. Nimon, a retired deacon of the Diocese who had ministered in St. Leo the Great Parish, Lincroft, and St. James Parish, Red Bank, died April 29 at age 95.
Funeral services will begin May 1 with a wake from 4-7 p.m. in St. James Church, 94 Broad St., Red Bank. A prayer service will take place at 5 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated May 2 at 2 p.m. also in St. James Church.
Burial will be in Brigadier General Doyle Military Cemetery May 4 at 2 p.m.
Deacon Nimon was born in the Marion section of Jersey City. He graduated from William L. Dickinson High School. He married his wife, Eileen at Camp Pendleton, Calif., before he leaving to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Korean War. The couple moved to Lincroft in 1954 and lived their for 45 years. They retired to Bradenton, Fla., where they lived for 19 years before returning to New Jersey in 2018 and taking up residence in Lincroft.
Deacon Nimon worked for a short time at Nelson Press printing company in Newark after his Marine Corps service. He then worked for 34 years with NJ Bell and then AT&T Major Markets. He was the co-founder and first president of the Travelers Aid of New Jersey at Newark International Airport. Also at the airport, he worked briefly as a ticket agent for Continental Airlines.
Deacon Nimon was ordained a deacon for the Diocese May 24, 1984 by Bishop John C. Reiss in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton, and served in St. Leo the Great Parish, of which he was a founding member of the parish. He was also a parish trustee, a founder of the St. Joseph’s Society, president of the Holy Name Society, secretary of the Monmouth County Holy Name Society, a member of the Serra Club of Monmouth County, a VNA hospice home visitor volunteer and was recognized as the Knights of Columbus Man of the Year.
When he moved to Florida, he worked in St. Joseph Parish, Bradenton, in the Diocese of Venice where he helped to expand the parish food pantry. He was also a member of the Maritime Ministry in Port Charlotte, the prison ministry in Venice and the area diaconate coordinator for Venice.
Volunteer work he performed over the years included serving as president and then chaplain of the Lincroft Volunteer Fire Company and was active with the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts.
Deacon Nimon was predeceased by his parents, John and Florence Nimon; his wife of 69 years, Eileen; three children, Mary Elizabeth, Chuck and Nancy, and four siblings. He is survived by a son, Michael (Tracy), a daughter Jennifer (Gonzales), two grandsons, a sister and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and parishioners.
