The Monsignor Toomey Memorial Diocesan Basketball Tournament took place Feb. 28 at the Mercer County CYO in Trenton, with four different schools coming up with championships.
This year’s tournament featured the Burlington County CYO champs against the Mercer County champs in the boys and girls JV (6th-grade-and-under) and Varsity (7th/8th- grade).
In girls JV action, St. Raphael’s/Holy Angels of Hamilton defeated St. Charles of Cinnaminson, 25-5, as Madison Grant had nine points for the winners.
Ben Peters scored 15 points to lead Our Lady of Good Council Moorestown to a 40-38 victory over St. Gregory’s, Hamilton in the boys JV contest.
Girls varsity play saw St. Mary of the Lakes of Medford top St. Greg’s, 27-20, as Riley Allen had 19 for St. Mary.
Sacred Heart of Riverton topped St. Gregory’s, 51-45, in the boys varsity game as Bennett Hart had 29 for the winners.
The tournament is named in memory of the Mercer County CYO founding director, the late Monsignor Leonard Toomey, who started the Diocesan Tournament in the 1950s and oversaw it for many years. After a brief period of inactivity, the tournament returned in 2008 and has been going strong ever since.
