“The Dobbs Decision and The Past, Present and Future of the Pro-Life Cause” will be the topic of a presentation scheduled for May 21 at 1:30 p.m. in St. Agnes Church, Atlantic Highlands.
Hosted by Catholic Vote and Our Lady of Perpetual Help-St. Agnes Parish, the event will feature a conversation between Professor Robert George, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University, and Harold Cassidy, who has engaged in a broad variety of litigation, both trial and appellate, in his 47 years in the private practice of law.
“I’m delighted to be appearing alongside my old friend Harold Cassidy – a powerful and deeply dedicated lawyer who has dedicated a great deal of his life to, and made many sacrifices for, the pro-life cause,” Professor George said. “It was through Harold’s good offices that I came to represent Mother Teresa back in 1994 in her brief to the Supreme Court. Being in conversation with him at St. Agnes will be a great pleasure.”
In addition to his academic service, which also includes being a frequent visiting professor at Harvard Law School, Professor George has served as chairman of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, on the President’s Council on Bioethics as a presidential appointee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and as the U.S. member of UNESCO’s World Commission on the Ethics of Science and Technology. He is a former Judicial Fellow at the U.S. Supreme Court, and he serves on numerous boards including the Templeton Foundation Religion Trust, the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, the Ethics and Public Policy Center, the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, the Heritage Foundation, the National Center on Sexual Exploitation and the Center for Individual Rights. He has authored numerous books and his essays and review essays have appeared in many publications.
Cassidy was designated a Certified Civil Trial Attorney by the New Jersey Supreme Court and he is a past member of the Board of Governors of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, New Jersey. He was selected by the governor to serve as a member of the state’s Bioethics Commission and in 2017 he was named by Who’s Who as one of the Top One Hundred Lawyers in North America. He has litigated numerous precedent-setting cases of public importance in criminal law, medical-legal and tort law, commercial litigation and the rights of pregnant women and their children and has distinguished himself as the leading attorney in the nation as a defender of the rights of pregnant mothers.
Cassidy obtained the only ruling in the country that maintained that an abortion kills a human being, and he obtained a ruling from an en banc panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals holding that an abortion places a pregnant woman mother at increased rise for suicide ideation and suicide.
