Students in St. Rose Grammar School, Belmar, recently received a lesson on internet safety, thanks to a visit from Detective John Sosdian of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
Sosdian spoke to the students during an assembly Jan. 27, the second of a two-part informational session. The first was presented at a PTA meeting, said Greg Guito, principal of St. Rose Grammar School.
Detective Sosdian discussed numerous areas of concern pertaining to the students’ use of the internet, including the proper use of social media, gaming and knowing with whom they are connected. The detective then showed the students examples of websites and apps that are filled with people persuading them to connect.
“Cyber safety is always reinforced in our technology classes,” Guito said. “Students are presented with a significant amount of information and data, and it’s important to know how to decipher the correct information and trust where it’s coming from.”
St. Rose Grammar School will continue to reinforce internet safety to the students in technology classes, as well as have a dialogue with parents about their responsibility to their children in terms of their internet safety, Guito said.
“Checking the history button on a computer and keeping close contact with activity is vital,” he said. “Parents who place themselves in charge of children end up making a path to success for them, including our cyber world.”
