On Nov. 5, Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., visited Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, Asbury Park, to bless the school’s new sensory classroom.
Before the blessing, the Bishop gathered with the school community for a program expressing gratitude for the new learning space and those who made it possible.

Joining students for the blessing were Father Jean Felicien, chancellor; Katie O’Meara, principal; Rev. Stephen Michael, S.V.D., pastor of Mother of Mercy Parish; fellow parish priests; and Dr. Vincent de Paul Schmidt, diocesan superintendent of Catholic education.
After the blessing, Bishop O’Connell toured the classroom and enjoyed a continental breakfast, speaking with his brother priests, faculty and staff members, and student leaders.
The Asbury Park school, along with four other grammar schools – St. Rose of Lima School, Freehold; St. Rose Grammar, Belmar; St. Mary of the Lakes, Medford; Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Asbury Parish, and Our Lady of Good Counsel, Moorestown, received grants to be used for funding the development of sensory spaces and train staff to work with students with special needs.
The Monitor is preparing a feature story on sensory classrooms in the five Catholic schools. Stay tuned for more.
