The White Mass commemorates the feast of St. Luke, patron saint of physicians and medical personnel who dedicate their careers to caring for the physical health and well-being of their patients. This year, two White Mass opportunities will be available in the Diocese of Trenton.
Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., will celebrate a countywide White Mass at noon Oct. 18 in St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral, Freehold. According to Msgr. Sam Sirianni, Co-Cathedral rector, the Mass is open to all Monmouth County healthcare professionals including hospital and nursing facility workers – administrators, physicians, nurses, technicians and maintenance crews, as well as home health aides and first responders. St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral is located at 61 Georgia Rd., Freehold.
Later that same day, the 13th annual White Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. in St. Luke Church, 1674 Old Freehold Rd., Toms River.
The name “White Mass” denotes the traditional white uniforms and lab coats worn by medical professionals. Those attending are encouraged to wear their white coats, scrubs or other work attire as desired.
The Masses are open to people of all faith traditions in the healthcare profession, including friends and family members.
The blessing of hands will also take place at the end of the Masses, sending healthcare professionals forth to serve their patients and clients. A reception for all in attendance will follow the Mass in St. Luke Church.
