A message from Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M.
In my Blue Mass homily in April of this year, I observed that “Law enforcement is not simply a job. It is a ‘ministry of presence’ — a vocation — a willingness to step into the places where others cannot or will not go.”
During National Police Week, the Diocese of Trenton joins communities across our nation in honoring the women and men who serve in law enforcement and remembering especially those who have given their lives in the line of duty. Their work often places them in difficult and dangerous situations, requiring courage, sacrifice and a deep commitment to the common good.
Throughout the four counties of the Diocese of Trenton, police officers and first responders serve our neighborhoods, schools and parishes with dedication and professionalism. We also recognize the sacrifices made by their families, who share the burdens and uncertainties of this vocation of service.
As Catholics, we are called to pray for all who protect and serve — for their safety, wisdom, integrity and strength. We pray as well for stronger relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve, rooted in mutual respect, justice and peace.
National Police Week and National Peace Officers Memorial Day remind us that authentic peace is built upon both justice and compassion. Together, may we continue working to uphold the dignity of every person and to strengthen the bonds of trust that unite our communities.
The Diocese of Trenton offers its gratitude to all law enforcement officers and first responders throughout our region. May God bless them and their families, grant eternal rest to those who have died in the line of duty, and guide our nation toward greater unity, justice, and peace.
