The question “Why should Catholics celebrate America’s 250th birthday?” will be explored during a May 19 presentation in the lower level of St. Gregory the Great Church, Hamilton Square.
Starting at 7 p.m., presenter Matthew Franck will highlight a number of perspectives, including how the 13 original American colonies that went on to form the United States in 1776 were established by Protestant Englishmen. Frank will also speak on the Declaration of Independence and the settlement of the large number of Catholics who arrived to the country from Europe years after America became independent.
A parishioner of St. Gregory the Great Parish, Franck is a senior fellow of the Witherspoon Institute, contributing editor to Public Discourse, visiting lecturer in politics at Princeton University, and professor emeritus of political science at Radford University. He has been published in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, First Things, National Review and other publications. He has also written numerous essays, reviews and chapters in academic journals and books.
The presentation is open to the public and will be followed by refreshments. St. Gregory the Great Church is located at 4620 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square.
