Funeral services were held March 14 in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, for Mercy Sister Marie Pierson who died March 6 in Overlook Medical Center, Summit. She was 86.
Born in Perth Amboy, Sister Marie attended St. Mary Elementary School and St. Mary High School, both South Amboy. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1957 and was given the name Sister Mary Seraphin.
Earning a degree in elementary education from Georgian Court University, Lakewood, Sister Marie taught in a number of Catholic schools in New Jersey including St. James School, Red Bank, where she taught both the primary and intermediate grades until her appointment as assistant principal and religion coordinator in 1972. She also taught in St. Joseph School, Keyport, after which she transitioned to serving in parish religious education programs in both the Trenton and Metuchen Dioceses. Among the parishes where she was a religious education director was Holy Family Parish, Union Beach.
Sister Marie is survived by a brother and sister-in-law; nephews, and grand nephews and grand nieces.
Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.
