A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 21 in Christian Brothers Academy’s Henderson Theater for Christian Brother Thomas Carney, who died at the Lincroft order’s De La Salle Hall June 16 after an extended illness. He was 73.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1947, Brother Thomas entered the Narragansett, R.I. novitiate June 30, 1965 and three months later on Sept. 1, 1965, he received the religious habit and name Thomas Clemens. He professed perpetual vows in 1973 in Pawtucket, RI, June 11, 1973.
Over his years of ministry, he worked at a number of academic institutions, including The Catholic University of America, Washington; De La Salle Academy, Newport, R.I.; La Salle Military Academy, Oakdale, N.Y.; Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, Brooklyn, N.Y., and the Sangre de Cristo Retreat Center, Santa Fe, N.M., and two terms in St. Raphael Academy, Pawtucket, from 1972-1980 and 1985-2009. He joined the staff of Christian Brothers Academy in 2009, teaching history and theology, and served at the Lincroft school until earlier this year when he retired due to health reasons.
Brother Thomas was buried at the Christian Brothers Cemetery, Narragansett, R.I.
