Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus sends His disciples out two by two to different towns. Their mission was special: to prepare the way for Jesus’ arrival. They were like His official messengers! Jesus gives them clear instructions. He tells them to not to take anything with them. No money, no food, and not to stop along the way. Do you think you would be able to be one of those 72? We live in a world where we are so attached to material things that it’s hard for us to just carry the word of God with us to share with others.

Today when you go out to different places instead of trying to engage in conversation with the people around you, we prefer to be on our cell phones and communicate with people by text and online. Of course, there are a few exceptions: people who try to carry out the mission and don’t cling to material things. Some even decide to leave everything for Jesus and be His messengers. Others use these tools to share His word in these times when technology plays a significant role in our daily lives. Do you know any people like this? Could you be one of these people to others?

Jesus wanted His disciples to trust in God and in the goodness of the people who would receive them. He taught them that the most valuable thing is not what we carry, but what we are and what we give from the heart. Their mission was to bring peace, hope, and healing. He told them to help the sick and to proclaim that “The Kingdom of God is at hand!” That means that when we treat others well – when we forgive, help, and share – we make God’s love present on Earth. We are also building the Kingdom of God!

Now, Jesus also warned them of something important: they would not always be well received. Sometimes, people don’t want to listen, or they close their hearts. And Jesus told them that if that happened, they should simply continue on their way, shaking the dust off their feet. Not with anger, but with peace. Because when you do good and someone doesn’t appreciate it, you are still fulfilling your mission. And even though you may often feel like you have failed in your mission, God sees it, knowing perfectly well that you have helped, that you have loved, and that fills God’s heart with joy.

This week, I invite you to detach yourself from material things and prepare Jesus’ way for others. To be His official messengers.
