After eight years of service at the Diocesan Chancery, Ronald Williams, a member of the security team, retired June 25 — leaving behind not just a job, but a workplace he considered a second home.
Employed through companies including Asset Protection Group, Allied Universal and Doyle Security Services, Williams worked as a security officer stationed at the Chancery’s main entrance. Staff and visitors alike came to know him for his cheerful, hospitable nature.
“It always felt like we were one big family,” Williams said. “Meeting the Bishop at the front entrance was always very pleasant and rewarding for me.”
Williams noted that his workdays were filled with laughter and the family spirit he shared with his colleagues, made Chancery more than just a workplace.
In retirement, Williams, who resides with his family in Florence, said he looks forward to spending more time with his older sister, hobbies that include watching baseball, football and bowling, as well as traveling with his wife, Diane, both in the United States and abroad.
He also joked that he’ll finally have the time to complete his wife’s long-standing “honey-do” list.
Responding to a post on the diocesan Facebook page, commentators praised Williams for his friendly and welcoming presence at the Chancery and that his daily greetings and constant smile brightened their days. Several people posted that they would miss his warmth, kindness and joy — with one Chancery employee recalling his signature “HI-YO!” and another calling him a “blessing” to all who entered the building. Collectively, Williams’ colleagues agreed that he will be remembered most for his professionalism and the daily positivity he brought to his role.
“Working at the Chancery has been a life experience I will never forget,” Williams said.
