A new Pentecost

If one image could possibly have captured the awe-filled experience shared at a five-day spiritual gathering on the Eucharist, this month’s cover image comes pretty close. Brought to you courtesy of Amanda Kleinmann, one of the participants from the Diocese of Trenton, the image shows the Blessed Sacrament housed in the monstrance and illuminated in the midst of some 60,000 attendees during evening Adoration at the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis.
While no stories, collection of photos or streams of videos can ever truly replicate what it was like for the participants of the Congress . . . we are confident that the 11 pages of special coverage in this month’s magazine will lend readers some understanding of this historic event in the life of the Church.
In his monthly column, Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., responds to cultural and political developments with “A little civility would go a long way.” The Bishop points out that “civility is not only a virtue that reveals good citizenship. It is also a virtue that reveals good Christianity and good humanity.” Don’t miss his encouragement on how we might best respond to the times.
History is being made in other corners of the Church, and this month’s issue brings the joyous moments when the Bishop traveled to Red Bank for the establishment of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri at St. Anthony of Padua Church. The faithful turned out, filling the church and annexed space to capacity, for this extraordinary moment in the life of the parish and the Diocese.
Look for special coverage on how parishes of the Diocese celebrated World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, and the multi-day, multi-location Mission: Jersey program that put young volunteers to work for those in need.
Check out these reports as well:
PARISHES – Father Kreml laid to rest; Blessing of the Ocean planned for Feast of the Assumption in shore parishes; Father Kennedy installed as pastor in St. Luke Parish, Toms River; St. Pio relics engage parishioners around the Diocese
SPIRITUALITY – Father Garry Koch’s The Word for August; Faith at Home focuses on forgiveness; Mary Morrell writes on the fruits of leadership; Parisian saints to accompany Catholics during Olympics, reopening of Notre Dame; Viewpoints installment, “Embracing the opportunities that each Sunday brings.”
There’s lots more to find in your new issue of The Monitor Magazine.
