Those involved with Mater Dei Prep’s Global Leaders Institute were busy over the summer expanding their influence in global communities – and will continue to be so this fall.
The Middletown school’s program aims to build globally conscious students, often working with those within the United Nations.
Mater Dei students, and up to 10 youth from St. Mary School, Middletown – which shares a campus with Mater Dei Prep – will be on hand for the United Nations International Day of Peace Conference Sept. 20 in New York. Some will serve as flag bearers during a peace bell ceremony before the conference. Scheduled to attend the day are Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Dr. Jane Goodall.
Students from the Global Leaders Institute have also been invited to speak at the Culture of Peace Initiative forum Sept. 13-14.
In addition, George Anthony, head of the school’s program, met with the president and director of the World Youth Alliance in July to discuss a collaborative partnership between the two organizations.
The WYA is a leading global organization engaging youth in leadership roles and the need to protect human dignity and human rights throughout the world. Members of WYA will be visiting Mater Dei Prep in October to learn more about Global Leaders. Bryan Scotton, a religion teacher in the school, will also assist with the goals and planning between the two organizations.
Anthony, a parishioner of St. Mary, Middletown, and Pathways to Peace U.N. representative, also attended a forum to discuss the achievements of his students and their roles in creating peaceful sustainable communities in support of U.N. development goals.
Later in July, he addressed the United Nations Interns at The Temple of Understanding Headquarters, speaking about the development of the Global Leaders “Education Tool Kit” developed by Mater Dei Prep students as well as effective leadership skills in challenging global environments.
Also keeping busy were the school’s former students, as alumna Kaitlin Grano was named youth chairperson for the United Nations Global Conference held in August in Salt Lake City, Utah.
