St. Mark CYO, Sea Girt, held “Operation Cookies for U.S. Soldiers in Afghanistan” Oct. 14. At least 35 CYO members, ages 14 to 18, and several parishioners baked, packed and shipped over 100 dozen cookies to three local U.S. soldiers and their platoons serving overseas. Matthew and Brian Brown of Sea Girt were chairmen of this service event, which was started by former CYO member Amanda Matyas five years ago. Mary Reilly, CYO director, said the group has been doing the event every year since. She said it’s easy to tell when the youth enjoy a service project because they come out in great numbers, which was the case for Operation Cookies. Reilly considers events like this, as well as “Operation Feed the Homeless” and “Operation Christmas Child” to be “cornerstone events” for the CYO program.
