Rise needs people to step up and volunteer

July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.

Rise, the primary non-profit social service organization in eastern Mercer County, offers a wide range of programs to help struggling individuals and families build independence and achieve their full potential in the Hightstown, East Windsor and surrounding communities.

Rise has a great appreciation for volunteer assistance and welcomes new volunteers to help in the organization’s various services, including its eclectic Greater Goods Thrift Store or helping to distribute food in the Rise Food Pantry.

The Greater Goods Thrift Store is a social enterprise whose proceeds directly fund concrete community services. Volunteers who work in the thrift store would have varied tasks including: sorting items, maintaining store organization and handling pick-ups/deliveries. Volunteers would be entitled to receive a $5 credit toward a purchase at Greater Goods to be used on the day he or she volunteers. Volunteers are asked to work a two-hour shift minimum.

The Rise Food Pantry works in collaboration with St. Anthony of Padua Parish, and is located in a facility that is adjacent to the parish grounds. The food pantry provides food and personal products to more than 500 low-income families every month. Due to the heavy volume of items that are distributed, volunteers are needed to help with pick-ups/deliveries, organizing food drives, distribution and general organization.

The food pantry is also in need of volunteer donations of produce to be distributed to folks coming in for food assistance. Donations can be dropped off at the Rise Food Pantry or Greater Goods Thrift Store.

Other volunteer opportunities include helping with our Summer Academic Camp, Rise to the TASK community dinners, back-to-school backpack drives, adopt-a-family holiday gift program, holiday food drive, the Martin Luther King Sleepy Time Drive, the Community Health & Wellness Fair. Rise also needs office support to complete tasks like filing, data input, translation, graphic design/marketing and writing grant proposals.

Rise has been helping the Hightstown area community since 1967 when a small group of community stakeholders founded the organization as the Community Action Service Center, Inc. (CASC). In 2008, after 40 years of service, the organization’s name changed from CASC to Rise: A Community Service Partnership.

For more information on volunteer opportunities, visit: www.rise-community-services.org or pick up a volunteer application at our main office or at Greater Goods Thrift Store.
