Funeral services scheduled for Mary Ellen Blackwell, longtime Catholic Charities staff member


Mary Ellen Blackwell, who served as the first director of the Parish Social Ministry of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Trenton, for the past 13 years, died Feb. 5 in the Fountainview Care Center, Lakewood. Ms. Blackwell also administered the Catholic Charities Parish Emergency Assistance Program.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Feb. 18 at noon in Holy Family Church, 1139 E. County Line Rd., Lakewood. The Mass will be concelebrated by Father Ronald Cioffi, pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Keyport, and former director of the diocesan Office of Social Concerns, and Father Robert Schulze, former diocesan coordinator of Jail and Prison Ministry. A light luncheon will be served following the Mass.

Born in Trenton and raised by her grandparents in Hamilton, Ms. Blackwell was a graduate of St. Raphael School, Hamilton; Notre Dame High School, Lawrenceville; The College of New Jersey, Ewing, and the Vocational School of Nursing in Abington, Pa, where she studied to become a licensed practical nurse.

Ms. Blackwell lived in Philadelphia for 25 years before moving to The Villages in Lakewood.

In addition to her grandparents, John and Anna Downing, Ms. Blackwell was predeceased by her parents, Clifford and Marie Blackwell and brother, John Blackwell. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Peggy (Margaret) and Edward Mulvan; a nephew and his wife, Edward and Debra Mulvan; two nieces, Donna (David) Zsenak and Maureen Mulvan, and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

She also leaves behind dear friends Miryam Francis, Alice Kelsey and Barbara S. and Edward McDonald.

Burial services will be private at the Colonial Memorial Cemetery, Hamilton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Catholic Charities, Diocese of Trenton, Parish Emergency Assistance Program, 383 West State Street, Trenton., N.J. 08618
