Fond memories of Cardinal Foley

July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.

I was saddened when I read of the death of Cardinal John Foley, who headed the Vatican office of communications and media for so many years.  I was fortunate to have met then-Archbishop Foley when his mother was residing in the nursing home where I worked in the Social Services department.  Cardinal Foley was very approachable and down-to-earth, and was loved by everyone.

One of my most memorable moments in that job was when an elderly couple, who had met while residents at the facility, told me that the local parish priest had refused to marry them.  I suggested that they talk to Archbishop Foley, who was visiting his mother at the time, and staying in the chaplain’s quarters.  He very graciously spoke with them, and I presume he spoke to the parish priest, and in short, within a few weeks I was invited to one of the most joyous weddings I ever attended.

Truly, such a good man and a wonderful example of our Church and priesthood.
