Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., traveled to St. John Vianney High School, Holmdel, Feb. 23 to present student James Gerard with the grand prize of the “Loving Life” Logo Contest – an Apple MacBook (laptop) computer.

Applauding Gerard’s creativity, Bishop O’Connell stated, “We are so proud of James and will use his logo throughout the year. In Catholic schools we celebrate the presence of Christ and Christ’s message. Congratulations to this wonderful school that shapes hearts, minds and vision.”

James explained that the inspiration for his design, which he created in his art class, came directly from the blue and yellow diocesan seal, which he reproduced, enhanced and adapted with the words ‘Loving Life’ emblazoned across the center. Gerard found the seal, also referred to as a shield, to be an appropriate symbol in that it signifies the need to protect life, Gerard said.

“I am extremely proud that people saw my logo and voted to have it represent the diocesan ‘Respect Life’ theme. It is an honor to have Bishop O’Connell visit SJVHS,” James said. The Gerard family’s pastor, Msgr. Sam Sirianni of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, Freehold, also attended to congratulate James.

Father Ian W. Trammell, director of the Diocesan Office of Life and Justice Ministries,
the sponsor of the logo contest, noted that the competition has been held annually for the last three years and was designed to engage students while giving them an opportunity to exercise their faith in a creative way. He explained that the diocese employed both the secular media and the internet to reach and engage young people.

“We need to look for more opportunities for young people to express their faith, and this contest is a great example. People went to the internet and voted, and so many more students participated this year. We are excited and want to continue the contest as more and more people will see the logo,” Father Trammell concluded.
