Bishop visits El Centro offices, learns ways to enhance outreach
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., visited Catholic Charities’ El Centro de Recursos Para Familias (The Family Resource Center) offices this morning to meet with its leadership and learn about the programs El Centro offers to the Spanish-speaking community in and around Trenton.
Bishop O’Connell, along with Sacred Heart Parish Pastor Father Dennis Apoldite, met with El Centro Director Roberto Hernandez, who shared highlights of his program’s more-than-decade-long service. El Centro is housed in the former Sacred Heart convent on South Broad Street in Trenton.
The Bishop hoped the meeting would be a springboard for the Diocese to enhance its outreach to its growing Latino population and highlight the ministry of priests of the Diocese, especially those who work within Spanish-speaking communities.
Founded in 1999, El Centro has been a trusted resource for those seeking help with basic needs, job training, English as a Second Language classes, parenting workshops and immigration services. It also provides individual and family counseling services. No appointments are required and most services are offered free of charge.
“The family is key,” Hernandez said, noting that “if there is an issue, we want to work with the entire family on a holistic level,” independent of family structure.
