Bishop Ahr Fund accepting requests

July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.

Once again, the Diocese of Trenton is extending a helping hand toward social service-minded organizations that benefit the poor in the form of a grant named for its seventh bishop.

Applications are now being accepted for the annual Bishop George W. Ahr Endowment Fund from now until April 20. The fund provides grants to parish organizations, apostolates or ministries within the Diocese of Trenton seeking to provide services for vulnerable and/or poor families. Grants are the endowment fund interest that accumulates in a year’s time, which amounts to a total of approximately $10,000 available for distribution.

Former grant recipients include the Center for FaithJustice, the Catholic Youth Organization of Mercer County, HABCore of Red Bank, Mount Carmel Guild, Interfaith Health and Support Services of Manahawkin and St. Vincent de Paul chapters of local parishes.

Last year, Precious Blood Parish, Monmouth Beach, used its $750 for hosting Family Promise of Monmouth County, which provides temporary assistance for homeless families four to five times a year. Parishioner volunteers house, feed, transport and give supportive services to three to five families in need of such assistance.

“Family Promise offers us as a parish community a wonderful opportunity to live the Gospel,” Father Robert F. Kaeding, pastor of Precious Blood Parish, wrote in an email. “The families we are able to serve … imitate for us the Christ. The Bishop Ahr grant will make it possible to serve them even better.”

The Mount Carmel Guild used its 2015 grant award to replenish its food pantry.

The guild’s director at the time, Marie Gladney, noted, “It was most definitely helpful. It all goes toward serving our clients and nursing patients. We are just very grateful for any assistance we receive to help us serve the poor.”

Applicants should provide a description of the project or program for which the grant is being requested and indicate the amount of funding being sought. Endowment funds are limited, with $10,000 total available for disbursement. Requests must be received on or before April 20 and should be forwarded to Msgr. Thomas N. Gervasio, Chair, Bishop Ahr Endowment Fund, Diocese of Trenton, P.O. Box 5147, Trenton, N.J. 08628.
