Bilingual Year of Mercy Celebration slated for March 19 in Toms River
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.

The extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy calls for extraordinary ways to observe and celebrate, and an upcoming, first-time spiritual event planned by the Diocese will offer the faithful just that.
All are invited to take part in a bilingual Jubilee Year of Mercy Celebration in Donovan Catholic High School, Toms River, March 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The day will feature opportunities for prayer, worship, song and the Sacrament of Confession in both English and Spanish, and will be capped by the procession of the Blessed Sacrament with Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M.
Arranged by Father Rene Pulgarin, diocesan liaison for the Hispanic and Portuguese communities, the celebration will include a bilingual opportunity for prayer, reflection and fellowship. Participants will complete most of the requirements to receive the plenary indulgence available during the Jubilee Year.
Two conference sessions on such subjects as the Prodigal Son, the merciful father, the lost sheep, the scrutinies and other topics on mercy will be offered in the morning.
The scrutinies, which are solemnly celebrated on the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent and are reinforced by an exorcism, are rites for self-searching and repentance, are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect, those who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil. The scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ.
Discussions in English will be held by Msgr. Sam Sirianni, pastor of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, Freehold, and Father K. Michael Lambeth, pastor of St. Theresa Parish, Little Egg Harbor, while Spanish-language presentations will be hosted by Father Pulgarin, who also serves as pastor of Christ the Redeemer Parish, Mount Holly, and Father Carlos Aguirre, parochial vicar in St. Joseph Parish, Toms River.
The day also offers English-language morning programming for children and young teens. They will reunite with their parents for lunch and afternoon programming.
Following lunch, all are invited to join Bishop O’Connell in a procession of the Blessed Sacrament during which the Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be prayed.
The cost for lunch is $10. Child care will be provided during the event. Registration in advance is preferred but walk-ins will be accepted.
To register, contact your local parish or Sandra Lopez at [email protected] or 609-403-7138.
Donovan Catholic High School is located on the campus of St. Joseph Parish, 685 Hooper Avenue, Toms River.
