Austin Steady, a member of St. Veronica Parish, Howell, and a junior at Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft, has been selected as the winner of the 2012 Loving Life Logo Contest sponsored by Respect Life Ministry of the diocesan Department of Pastoral Care.
Steady, whose winning entry was both striking and subtle, with the human bond between love and life conveyed by a silhouette of two hands forming a heart, will be presented with an Apple MacBook by Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M. in January shortly before the annual March for Life in Washington, Jan. 23.
Donna Goodwin, coordinator of Respect Life Ministry, reported that students from nine Catholic high schools and six public high schools participated in the contest, from which judges selected five finalists. The five were posted to the website, RespectLifeToday.com so that viewers could vote on their choice for best logo between Nov. 1 and Nov. 30.
The contest called upon high school-aged teens living in the counties of Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth, and Ocean to design a unique logo reflecting the Church’s teaching that all life is sacred and all Catholics are called upon to respect life at all its stages.
The winning logo, which will be used throughout the coming year in various forms, on apparel, in media and other promotional tools, was announced Dec. 1. Steady received 32 percent or 416 of the total 1,291 votes cast.
Created in black and white, Steady said he chose the design for his logo with the aim of wrapping love and life together in a simple manner.
“I felt that sacrificing color lent to the simplicity of the intended result while using a silhouette of hands forming a heart created the bond between love and life,” Steady said. “I placed the word ‘life’ inside the heart in order to further emphasize the connection.
“The logo’s directness allows the message to come across clearly which is crucial in spreading the idea,” he said.
In addition to Steady, the other four finalists were: Matthew McCarthy, St. Dominic Parish, Brick, sophomore, Monsignor Donovan High School, Toms River; Katharine Russo, St. Veronica Parish, Howell, Red Bank Catholic High School; Brian Honeker, St. Joseph Parish, Toms River, junior, Monsignor Donovan High School, Toms River; Matthew Catalano, St. Thomas More Parish, Manalapan, sophomore, Marlboro High School.
