Teaching the faith through the Catholic press
A Message from Bishop David M. O'Connell, C.M.

When the Diocese of Trenton chose the phrase “Go teach” as the motto for this year’s Bishop’s Annual Appeal, it was not an idea born in the Pastoral Center.  “Go, teach all nations (Matthew 28: 9)” was the final directive given by the Lord Jesus Christ to his disciples before his Ascension.

In the past few weeks, I hope that everyone in the Diocese has had a chance to see the DVD for the Appeal produced for the parishes or, at least, to hear about this year’s theme.  Although “Catholic Education” through our schools and religious education programs takes center stage this year, the DVD and other materials distributed in connection with the Appeal attempt to make it very clear that the Diocese of Trenton fulfills the Lord’s command in many wonderful ways, thanks to your support.

One such way – and a way I am very proud of as Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton – is the bi-weekly publication of The Monitor, our diocesan newspaper.  Throughout the many years that have passed since I was first ordained a priest, I have had the occasion to serve in a number of different dioceses, each with its own publication.  The Monitor, however, stands at the top of the list of Catholic publications that I have read over these years.

In many respects, The Monitor is one of the best resources available within the Diocese of Trenton to help us fulfill our responsibility to “Go teach.”  Not only does our diocesan newspaper bring together the four counties that make up our large and diverse Diocese with extensive and broad coverage of the happenings within but also this publication continues the Catholic education of our clergy, religious and faithful with stories and timely, insightful coverage of events within the larger Catholic world.  It demonstrates the highest quality among its peer publications.

I know that The Monitor often whets our appetite to learn and study more about the things that contribute to and serve the mission of our Church.  That, in itself, is a tremendous benefit provided by our diocesan newspaper.  I, for one, believe that the Diocese of Trenton has been greatly blessed by this resource and remain very grateful to those who make it available to us all.

“Go teach.”  Jesus’ command.  Our responsibility.  The Monitor is a great means for us to teach because it is also a great way for us “to learn.”  As St. Augustine once said, “tolle et lege,” pick up and read!
