Something to think about

Bishop David M. O'Connell, C.M.

In all the confusion that surrounds current political debates on providing affordable health care to the people of the United States, it is difficult to predict what the final outcome will be.

Recently, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops called upon Congress in its deliberations “to consider important moral criteria, especially pertaining to the most vulnerable among us, including the unborn and those experiencing deep poverty.”

The Bishops of the United States have consistently advocated for a health care system in which “everyone should be cared for and no one should be deliberately killed.”  The Bishops asked Congress to ensure health care coverage for the millions of people who rely upon it.

Noting that the Catholic Church "provides health care, purchases health care and helps to pick up the pieces for those who fall through the cracks of the health care system when it fails," the Bishops urged Congress to adopt "a new spirit of cooperation for the sake of the common good."

As a Bishop, taking sides in partisan politics is not my intention or place here. Rather, my only concern is our responding to the call of the Lord Jesus in the Gospel to show love and compassion for one another in every way possible from conception through natural death.  Providing health care is one concrete way of doing that.

My hope and my prayer in these days when so many people anticipate the worst and live in fear is that the “better angels of our nature” will prevail and move those in positions of power to respond affirmatively to the Lord Jesus’ call.

– Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M.
