Fair Haven parish's Year of Marriage initiative yields affirming results

When a parish sees a nearly seven-fold increase in couples preparing for marriage in the span of 12 months, something unique is happening.

That something was a Year of Marriage initiative, instituted in Nativity Parish, Fair Haven, by its pastor, Father James Grogan, in December 2017. For the next 12 months, he dedicated homilies, essays and recognition to the vocation of marriage, hoping to support and strengthen the “remote preparation” for marriage.

USCCB's marriage, family website gets fresh, new look
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has announced its new mobile-responsive ForYourMarriage.org website that includes updated content, graphics and a new section dedicated to marriage and family ministry leaders.  

ForYourMarriage.org, which began in 2007, is an initiative of the USCCB that began as the communications component of the National Pastoral Initiative for Marriage. It continues to play a key role in advancing the USCCB’s priority on marriage and family.

Marriage ministry a year-round support system, leaders say

The month of February may be in the rearview mirror, but those who work in marriage ministry agree that World Marriage Sunday and National Marriage Week – both of which fall during the second week of February – simply call attention to the importance of supporting the vocation all through the year.

“Marriage is a vocational call to service,” said parish marriage ministry coordinator Lori McCahill and her husband, Mike, who recently gave a testimony talk in St. Benedict Church, Holmdel.

Married couples called to live out Baptism at retreat in Mount Laurel parish
Married couples who participated in a retreat Feb. 12 in St. John Neumann Parish, Mount Laurel, were treated to a blend of music and Scripture courtesy of Father Jim Grogan, pastor of Nativity Parish, Fair Haven, who also shared his own experience with married life.

The retreat was held during National Marriage Week, (Feb. 7-14) and the day after World Marriage Sunday (Feb. 11), and included Father Grogan’s advice on living out one’s Baptism in married life.
