Father Bowden remembered for his faith, friendship and devotion

In his 57 years of priestly ministry, Father John V. (Jay) Bowden became known for reaching out to help people find their way to Christ in the parishes and ministries he served, especially the diocesan Cursillo.

On July 9, the vast sanctuary of St. Gregory the Great Church, Hamilton Square, reflected the success of that mission as hundreds gathered to honor Father Bowden, who died July 3 in Morris Hall, Lawrenceville, after an extended illness. He was 82.

UPDATE: Funeral arrangements announced for Father John V. Bowden
Funeral services have been announced for Father John (Jay) V. Bowden, who died July 3 in Morris Hall, Lawrenceville, after an extended illness. He was 82.

A priest of the Diocese for 57 years, Father Bowden was born in Trenton in 1936 to John and Margaret Bowden. He grew up in Blessed Sacrament Parish (now part of Sacred Heart Parish), Trenton, where he graduated from the parish grammar school in 1950 and from Trenton Catholic High School in 1954.

Mass on Top of the Mountain forges solidarity in faith, brotherhood for men of all ages

As the early morning fog lifted over the top of Mount Tammany, the crackle of twigs being snapped underfoot mingled with light conversation and prayer.

But most often, the soft sounds of the woods were enveloped in a peaceful quiet, as about 150 men of all ages hiked North Jersey’s Dunnfield Creek Natural Area to the summit in silent contemplation.

The Monitor to transition to monthly magazine, expanded digital presence, parish partnerships

Bishop O'Connell reports on highlights of U.S. bishops' meeting in Baltimore
The U.S. Bishops’ June meeting in Baltimore has ended with an agenda dominated by the response to the crisis involving the sexual abuse of minors by clergy. 

If I had to “read the room,” two things immediately struck me as the meetings began: first, the bishops present seemed exhausted, but committed to continue doing all that they can for victims in their dioceses; and, second, the bishops expressed great eagerness to ensure that the laity are given a prominent, even leading role in handling cases of sexual abuse of minors by clergy, including bishops.
