Funeral services will be held in St. Joseph Church, 540 North Olden Ave., Trenton, for Deacon Michael Collins who died May 4 at age 65.
Viewing hours will be May 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. and May 11 from 9 to 9:45 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m.
A lifelong New Jersey resident, Deacon Collins retired after dedicating 25 years to the City of Trenton as a building inspector. He was ordained a deacon May 12, 2012, by Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton.
In St. Joseph Parish, he spent numerous hours teaching religious education and ministering to youth. He was also active with his community coaching soccer and volunteering as a member of the Fathers and Men United for a Better Trenton and Sweat Equity Affordable Housing Programs.
Deacon Collins was predeceased by his mother Teresa O’Neill Collins. He is survived by his wife of more than 36 years, Marlene Lao-Collins, who is executive director of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Trenton; two sons, Eric and Abraham; five siblings and their spouses; his mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins and other relatives.
