Gov. Murphy signs law doubling funding for nonpublic school security

Gov. Phil Murphy smiles as he signs into law a bill that will increase nonpublic school security by $11.3 million. Frances Koukotas photo

Gov. Phil Murphy signed into law Jan. 8 a bill that doubles funding for security in nonpublic schools.

Under the bill, religious and private schools in the state will see security funding increase from $75 to $150 per student. The additional $11.3 million in funding will go to various security measures and upgrades.

Update: Bishop Rodimer leaves lifetime legacy of ministry in Paterson Diocese

PATERSON – Retired Bishop Frank J. Rodimer of Paterson died Dec. 6 in St. Joseph’s Home for the Elderly in Totowa. He was 91.

When Bishop Rodimer became the sixth bishop of the Diocese Feb. 28, 1978, he had the unique distinction of being installed as the only priest of the Paterson Diocese to have ever been raised to the episcopacy. He retired in 2004. Earlier this year, he moved into St. Joseph’s Home.

Diocese of Paterson mourns death of Bishop Emeritus Frank J. Rodimer
Bishop Emeritus Frank J. Rodimer, who led the Diocese of Paterson from 1978 until his retirement in 2004, died Dec. 6 at the age of 91.

The announcement was made by Bishop Arthur J. Serratelli, current Bishop of Paterson, who expressed “great sadness” and called upon his flock to remember Bishop Rodimer and all who were close to him in their prayers.

Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., shared this message upon learning about Bishop Rodimer’s death:  "On behalf of the clergy, religious and faithful of the Diocese of Trenton, I express both our sadness at the passing of Bishop Emeritus Frank Rodimer, sixth bishop and native son of the Diocese of Paterson, and our joyful gratitude for his many years of priestly ministry in the Church.  May God continue to bless the Diocese of Paterson and may Bishop Rodimer rest in the Lord's peace."

Legacy of William Bolan, retired NJCC chief, celebrated at funeral Mass
The abiding faith and selfless service of William F. Bolan Jr. was celebrated Nov. 3 during a Mass of Christian Burial among loving family, friends and colleagues in his parish church of St. James, Pennington. An advocate for the underprivileged and downtrodden during his 22 years as executive director of the New Jersey Catholic Conference, Bolan died Oct. 25.  More ...

Assisted suicide bill delayed, more time to contact reps

The New Jersey assisted suicide bill, which was scheduled for a vote Oct. 29, has been postponed to an undetermined later date.

Patrick R. Brannigan, executive director of the New Jersey Catholic Conference, the public policy arm of the state’s bishops, said that the delay is an opportunity for people to call their legislators and let them know why they oppose assisted suicide.
