This summer, students entering grades two through eight once again are invited to explore their inner scientist, artist or engineer during three one-week sessions in the greater Trenton area.

The third annual STREAM Camp, a collaboration between St. Ann School, Lawrenceville, and St. Raphael School, Hamilton, will allow students to explore the subject areas of  science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics as well as religion. Catholic school teachers Meredith Daniel of St. Ann School and St. Raphael School’s Remi Cruz and Kim Smith will serve as camp directors and will be assisted by a group of expert instructors who will cover programming, robotics and team challenges.

“Some experiments would be difficult to execute in a traditional school classroom setting,” Daniel said, “due to their length or degree of difficulty. This camp setting, with its smaller class sizes and age-appropriate activities, is a perfect venue in which to try new projects.”

In addition to typical STEAM course offerings, Pope Francis’ encyclical, “Laudato Si,” will serve as a lens of faith for the camp’s unit on the environment. Smith noted, “The religion aspect makes it different. The children will develop empathy and a global awareness while incorporating Catholic principles.”

The three week-long sessions, their locations and topics are:

🌞  June 17 – 21 (St. Ann School)

Theme: “On the Move,” which includes classes on magnets, waves, sound, travel, force, robots in motion, Code and Go, designing machines and 3-D mechanics.

🌞  July 8 – 12 (St. Raphael School)

Theme: “Speak Life,” with classes on 3D design, code for humanity, plants, animals, the environment, biology, chemistry and life-saving robots.

🌞  Aug. 12 – 16 (St. Raphael School)

Theme: “Nothing is Impossible,” featuring classes covering innovation, design, invention, coding, 3-D design, flight and robotics in emergencies.

Each of the three sessions also has the option for a week-long class on app creation or one on innovation and design; the June session also includes a Lego Mindstorms robotics challenge.

Tuition for each week-long STREAM camp session is $250 per child; each session has accommodations to serve 40 to 50 children and space is limited to a first-come-first-served basis. Children from any area school are eligible to attend. Extended care before and after sessions is available at an additional fee.
