Jean Owen, who had served as a math teacher in Mater Dei Prep, Middletown, for many years, died July 11 in Haven Hospice Center, Edison, at age 91.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 16 in St. Luke Church, Toms River.

Born in Jersey City, Mrs. Owen was a resident of Toms River for 25 years and a member of St. Luke Parish, where she served on many ministries.

She had entered religious life at age 17, joining the order of Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, N.Y., and remained part of that community for 27 years. She eventually went on to marry her husband, Robert Owen, who died in 1993. Her work in the field of education included teaching on all grade levels. She  also taught computer education to students in a variety of settings from the Winnebago Reservation, to corporations such as Westinghouse and Prudential  and served as a math teacher in Mater Dei High School, Middletown. Her own educational pursuits led her to earn a master’s level in mathematics.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Owen was predeceased by three brothers. She is survived by her siblings, many nieces, nephews, great and grand nieces and nephews. Burial was in Woodbine Cemetery, Wall.
