Funeral services will be held Feb. 15 in Corpus Christi Church, Willingboro, for Deacon James E. Ayrer Jr., who died Feb. 10. He was 86.

A viewing will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. at which time a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.

Deacon Ayrer held a bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph University, Philadelphia, a master’s degree from Fordham University, Bronx, N.Y., and a doctorate in measurement and statistics from Rutgers University. For many years he had studied theology in La Salle University, Philadelphia.

Deacon Ayrer worked for the N.J. Department of Civil Service as an employment test developer for 12 years then spent the last 28 years of his working career with the School District of Philadelphia primarily as a consultant in measurement and then as director of testing. He retired in 1996.

Deacon Ayrer was active in his community, serving for 34 years on the Willingboro Township Council from 1980 to 2014. He also served three terms as mayor, as the council liaison to the Local Assistance Board and the Public Communications Committee for which he wrote a bimonthly column “Preserving the Quality of Life in Willingboro.”

In Corpus Christi Parish, he was active as a member of the choir, chairman of the Men’s Club and a reader, before he responded to the call to become a deacon. He was ordained in 1992 by Bishop John C. Reiss in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton. As a deacon, he ministered to the hospitalized and provided outreach to people looking to return to the Church and receive the Sacraments by validating marriages and serving as an annulment advocate.

Deacon Ayrer was the son of James E. and Elizabeth S. Ayrer. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Clara M. Ayrer; his children James E. (Karen); Susan (Keith) Ward; Kevin (Christine); Patty (Teddy) Egley, and Sharon (Ed) Suchora; 10 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Park, Cinnaminson.
