Deacon Charles J. Smith, who served in St. Mary Parish, Middletown, died Dec. 7 in his home in Red Bank.

Funeral services will begin Dec. 13 with visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. in St. Mary Church, 19 Cherry Tree Farm Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Dec. 14 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.

Born in Brooklyn, he resided there most of his life before moving to Red Bank in 2000. Deacon Smith served in the Marine Corps for eight years including in the Korean War. He was a police officer with the New York Police Department before retiring in 1982. He was ordained a deacon for the Diocese of Brooklyn in 1986. Since moving to Red Bank he has served as a deacon in St. Mary Parish. He was incardinated a deacon for the Trenton Diocese in 2005. He was active with the Knights of Columbus, the Third Order of St. Francis and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Deacon Smith was predeceased by his wife, Marie (Conaty) Smith who died in 2005. He is survived by his son, Stephen of Bangor, ME; a daughter-in-law, Alana of Lakewood; a daughter, Maura (Edward) of Fair Haven; five grandchildren, a cousin, and extended family.
