As part of the Faith in our Future initiative, the diocesan Department of Pastoral Planning is sponsoring a workshop on the best practices for building inter-parish collaboration on May 10 in the Chancery, Lawrenceville, or May 11 in St. Mary Church, Colts Neck. Presenter Mark Mogilka of the Diocese of Green Bay, Wisc., will discuss multiple parish ministry ideas and his talk is intended for clergy, staff and parish leaders.

For most of the Diocese’s history, each parish had its own pastor, staff, ministries programs and organizations. The workshop will address the future opportunities and challenges arising from merging and linking parishes, multi-cultural communities and participation in cohort groups, and will discuss what parishioners can learn from the experience of others that can help us avoid the pitfalls and be successful.

Reflecting on the importance of the upcoming workshops, Terry Ginther, diocesan executive director of Pastoral Life and Mission said, “Moving from good-natured rivalry and outright competition to collaborative partnerships between neighboring parishes will take work and patience.  It is a new path for us in the Diocese of Trenton.  When in unfamiliar territory, it’s great to have a guide.  Mark Mogilka will bring with him the experience of Catholic parishes around the country who have walked the pathway of collaboration.  I’m excited for him to share with leaders in our Diocese the best practices of inter-parish collaboration.  It will certainly help us to navigate the road ahead.”

Mogilka serves as director of stewardship and pastoral services for the Diocese of Green Bay. He chaired the national study committees on multiple-parish pastoring and multiple-parish ministry through the Emerging Models of Pastoral Leadership Project, and co-authored a book on the subject with Dr. Kate Wiskus published by Loyola Press. Mogilka has worked with parish consolidation and cohort development in dioceses around the country, and is a frequent workshop presenter for the Conference on Pastoral Planning and Council Development, and the National Leadership Roundtable on Church Management.
