Statement of Bishop Edward U. Kmiec, bishop of Buffalo, on the passing of Bishop John C. Reiss

I am profoundly saddened at the passing of my dear friend, Bishop John C. Reiss, bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Trenton.

His death has touched me personally by virtue of the fact that for so many years, the two of us collaborated in ministry.

Bishop Reiss ordained me as a bishop in 1982, and I served him for 10 years as auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Trenton, prior to going onto Nashville.

He was truly a wonderful mentor and during the course of our years together, I learned from him many lessons of pastoral governance, marked by the humility and kindness that he displayed on a daily basis in his ministry.

It will be my privilege to attend his funeral and be the homilist at his funeral Mass.

May God grant him eternal rest which he so faithfully deserves as a good and faithful servant of the Lord.

Statement by Bishop Emeritus John M. Smith on the death of Bishop John C. Reiss, Eighth Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton

Bishop Reiss’ deep faith, dedicated zeal, rich spirituality, pastoral leadership and patient gentleness have greatly contributed to the tremendous growth and spiritual development of the diocese, especially during his 17 years as our bishop.

Bishop Reiss was a most committed priest, a dedicated pastor and a gentleman. How blessed we were to have had a shepherd who spent his entire life serving the Diocese of Trenton as both a priest and bishop.
