Over the years, Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., and Father Garry Koch have gathered many fans and followers of their regular columns in The Monitor.  Bishop O’Connell publishes frequent essays on topics of general interest and spiritual importance, and Father Koch is the long-time author of “The Word,” a commentary on each Sunday’s Scripture.

With the launch of the Diocese’s newest digital media project – “Catching the Word” – those wishing to listen, rather than just read commentary pieces from the Bishop and Father Koch, will be able to do so at their convenience.  Fans as well as newcomers to the show may access this new audio resource by visiting dioceseoftrenton.org/podcasts, where they can listen to, or download the file through the SoundCloud player that is made available on the page.

According to Rayanne Bennett, executive director of Communications and Media, the podcast’s title reflects the idea that people will be listening to these sound files on the go.  “Many folks are looking for inspirational content during their commute, or other times that find them on the go, but still connected by their smart phones.”

She added, “It’s our hope that we will reach more people with these podcasts than would otherwise read the reflections on the website or in The Monitor.”

“Catching the Word” officially opened in late August with Bishop O’Connell’s first podcast; this one heralding the quickly arriving World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation on Sept. 1.  The Bishop’s messages will be posted as podcasts as they become available, along with other featured audio pieces, such as homilies and presentations.

The podcast series will feature weekly insights on the upcoming Sunday Mass Readings from Father Koch, who is the pastor of St. Benedict Parish, Holmdel. In each of his podcasts, Father Koch will elaborate on the homilies he preaches during his parish Masses and the reflections he contributes to each issue of The Monitor. Father Koch also prepared a special podcast in observance of the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The Office of Communications and Media is working toward making the podcast available through iTunes as well, and will announce that access once it is available. For more information on “Catching the Word,” email dotcomm@dioceseoftrenton.org.
