If you are an American Indian, then you are the only ones whose parents were not immigrants, many seeking refuge from wars from pre-Colonial days through the 21st century. We have had mass killings here in United States by those who were American-born and not Middle Eastern, such as the bombing in Oklahoma City and the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut.

Yes, we need tight screening and close supervision and it takes seven or more years to gain citizenship. Our seminarians from other countries who come to serve us have to go over to immigration services to document their presence several times a year!

The war efforts of France and others forming a coalition is in line with the Catechism of the Catholic Church’s definition of a just war. All have the right to safety and self defense. But at the same time, thousands more have been killed in Syria, Lebanon, Nigeria, Iraq and Sierra Leone. Even this month, 13 Catholic Churches have been burned down and their pastors killed or kidnapped in Indonesia. There are no simple answers.

Mary and Joseph were once refugees – they fled to Egypt with their divine Son. We need to follow Our Lady’s message at Fatima, Lourdes and Guadalupe – pray the Rosary and live your faith daily. Remember – the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the growth and sanctity of the Body of Christ, the Church.
