From Rayanne Bennett
Associate Publisher and
Diocesan Executive Director of Communications

We’d like to make you aware of a few changes you can expect to see in The Monitor beginning in the coming months.  The changes are aimed at both containing expenses and maximizing our reach and impact among those readers who now consume much of their news digitally, most especially our youth and young adult communities.

COST-RELATED CHANGES

We are working to keep our costs down so that we do not have to raise subscription prices for individual readers and parishes.  It has been more than 10 years since The Monitor raised its subscription price.

Over these many years, The Monitor has incurred substantial increases in the costs of paper, printing and postage.  And while salaries increase along with the ancillary costs of conducting our work, The Monitor has delivered even greater value to our readership with enhanced multimedia coverage and four premium magazine-style publications each year.

Our current rates remain at $29 per year for the basic subscription and $15 per year for educational and ministerial purposes.  The following changes are being put in place so that we can continue to honor those rates:

PUBLISHING SCHEDULE – Beginning July 1, 2018, The Monitor will publish 24, rather than 26, issues each year.  We will be eliminating the first issue in July and the second issue of December.  (To see a copy of the schedule, click here.)

PAGE SIZE REDUCTION – You may notice, beginning in July, that the overall page size of The Monitor will be slightly smaller.  This will have very little impact on the content we will continue to offer, but it will allow for a savings on paper and postage.

ENHANCED WEB EXPERIENCE

NEW WEBSITE – This summer we will be upgrading our website, TrentonMonitor.com.  The new site will offer us many more options for digital publishing and engagement, resulting in an improved user experience.

MOVING SOME CONTENT TO DIGITAL ONLY – In an effort to reach our YOUTH and YOUNG ADULTS where they are at – online – much of our content for these age groups will move from the print edition to an e-newsletter format, where it will be accessible via mobile devices and be distributed by text or email.  We anticipate making that move in the fall and will have more information available at that time.

ALSO COMING THIS SUMMER ... Watch for a reader survey that you will be able to fill out either in print or online.  We want to hear from you so that we can continue to develop The Monitor in ways that will be most engaging for our readers.

If you have any questions or comments about these changes, please do not hesitate to reach out.  You will find our contact information at the bottom of page 2.

On behalf of our publisher, Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., I wish to thank all of our subscribers for your most faithful support of this diocesan newspaper.  You are the reason we continue to work hard to publish informative and inspiring Catholic news.  If you would like to help our cause, please tell your fellow parishioners about why you read The Monitor, and consider becoming a supporter of our GIFT SUBSCRIPTION PROGRAM by clicking here

May God continue to bless you and yours.
