Looking out to the overflowing crowd gathered in St. James Church, Pennington, for Msgr. Michael J. Walsh’s Sept. 14 Mass of Christian Burial, Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., said, “We have come together with great sadness to commend to Almighty God our beloved brother, Msgr. Michael J. Walsh, a priest of Jesus Christ for more than 53 years.”

“Our sadness is real,” Bishop O’Connell, said as he reflected on Msgr. Walsh, a priest of the Diocese who died Sept. 7 at age 77. “But the Word of God proclaimed today does not allow sadness to have the final word.”
Hundreds attended the funeral Mass including members of Msgr. Walsh’s family, the majority of whom flew in from Ireland, some 60 of his brother priests who concelebrated the Mass, as well as numerous deacons and lay faithful from around the Diocese who Msgr. Walsh had known and ministered to during his 53 years of priesthood. Those unable to attend the Mass in person were able to view the livestream on the diocesan Youtube channel.
