Catholic school students excel in CYO spelling bee

Young people got a chance to use their spelling skills during the Mercer County Catholic Youth Organization’s annual spelling bee.

Held April 21 in the Monsignor Toomey Annex of the CYO Center in Yardville, this year’s event featured a junior varsity competition for students in sixth grade and under and a varsity competition for seventh and eighth graders. More than 20 spellers participated from Our Lady of Sorrows School, Hamilton; St. Paul School, Princeton; Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, Princeton, and Trenton Catholic Preparatory Academy, Hamilton.
Each Catholic school or parish in the county were invited to send up to three finalists per division (three junior varsity spellers and three varsity spellers) for a total of six finalists to the CYO Spelling Bee Championship.
In the junior varsity competition, Isabella LaFalce Hoffman from Our Lady of Sorrows School was the runner-up while Ryan Ekenta, also from Our Lady of Sorrows School, was crowned the champion.
In the varsity competition, Amelia Kenney from St. Paul School was the runner-up while Stephanie Chynoweth, also from St. Paul School took home the title.
